I paint because it brings joy into my life. When things are going well, I paint quickly and easily; a message is relayed honestly from my mind to my hand to the canvas. Of course, like anything worth doing, it’s not always painless. I find myself struggling, hindered by uncertainty. I must be confident and true to my identity in order to overcome these obstacles. I begin with a simple sketch and squeeze out large quantities of paint. I proceed as quickly as possible, with four and two-inch wide brushes. In working this way, I hope to preserve the essence of the image in my mind and minimize superfluous information.

A great deal of freedom comes with being a painter, but with this freedom comes responsibility. I write my own job description. Of a thousand different things, the only person who decides what being an artist means for me is me. The paintings on this site give me a sense of identity, a symbol of who I am and what brought me here. For most of my work, I have drawn on scenes and objects in nature. The connection I have fostered with the natural world and its tapestry of life is the nearest thing I have to religion. I have tried to share this relationship with the viewer, to capture those moments of beauty and humility that I have experienced, so you may see what I see.
